Situated on the Macquarie River just below its junction with the Cudgegong River sits the Burrendong Dam, creating the man-made reservoir, Lake Burrendong. It is about 330 kilometres north-west of Sydney, upstream from nearby Wellington, in the central west region of New South Wales, Australia.


The Burrendong Dam wall is just over 1 kilometre long and 78 metres high, and the supplies the Macquarie Valley and environmental flows to the Macquarie Marshes. The traditional owners and occupants of this land are the Wiradjuri people also known as the people of the three rivers. Home to the Burrendong Arboretum, which was established in 1964 as a result of the efforts of George and Peter Althofer, the 167 hectare Garden opens from sunrise to sunset every day of the year.

Picnic areas, toilets, views of the lake, varied walks, plant sales and children's treasure hunts. Free guided tours of Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum are available by arrangement every 4th Sunday of each month. Native animals and birds may be seen on site, such as kangaroos and emus. Special features are the plantings of rainforest plants in the fern gully, the mint bushes and the collection of plants from Western Australia.
